Hands-on soldering experience introduces middle and high school students to the skills and opportunities shaping the future of electronics manufacturing.

Students at Richmond Heights School District in Ohio are discovering new possibilities for their futures through hands-on electronics education made possible by STEM kits provided by the Electronics Foundation.

Featured in a November 2026 Spectrum News 1 report, the district's Career Connections class is giving students in grades 7–9 an opportunity to explore electronics manufacturing through practical learning experiences. With guidance from industry professionals, students used Electronics Foundation STEM kits to practice soldering, assemble circuit boards, and see their work come to life.

The experience introduces students to technical skills used throughout the electronics manufacturing industry while helping them explore career pathways they may not have previously considered.

“We have to give our students the opportunity to see the possibilities of their future,” said Dr. Marnisha Brown, superintendent of Richmond Heights School District, in the Spectrum News 1 report.

The event connected classroom learning with real-world industry experience. Students learned from electronics manufacturing professionals, including representatives from RBB, an electronics manufacturer, who shared insights into the variety of careers available across the industry.

From engineering and hands-on assembly to equipment maintenance, purchasing, sales, and accounting, electronics manufacturing offers opportunities for individuals with a wide range of interests and skills.

“Programs like these are so important,” said Kelly Allen, Global Electronics Association instructor. “We are building the next generation of engineers, operators, and soldering is a good first step into the career path of electronics manufacturing.”

Richmond Heights is among the 120 schools, community colleges, and universities that have received Electronics Foundation STEM kits. These educational resources help students develop foundational electronics skills, including soldering and safety practices that align with those used in professional manufacturing environments.

The initiative supports the Electronics Foundation's commitment to inspiring and developing the next generation of electronics talent. By bringing hands-on learning into classrooms, the Foundation helps educators introduce students to the technology, skills, and career opportunities that power the electronics industry.

Early exposure is especially important as the electronics manufacturing industry continues to seek skilled workers to support innovation and growth. Providing students with opportunities to explore these careers can help build awareness, confidence, and interest in future technical pathways.

The Spectrum News 1 coverage highlights the impact of these educational experiences and the importance of connecting students with industry at an early age.
